New Bike Co-op/Shop! New Records!

January 19, 2008

New Bike Co-op/Shop! Details forthcoming… We’ve got some fresh blood in the building. And all parties involved are super stoked! Keep your ears to the ground, and your tubes inflated!

Here’s some new fun stuff coming in next week!

planes_weridetiny.gif
Planes Mistaken For Stars “We Ride To Fight” CD

Planes Mistaken For Stars has pounded the road (and the road has pounded back) for a decade, never relenting, never giving up an inch taken. We find here: a rusty lockbox, full to bursting with incriminating details, blood and hair samples, and photographic evidence culled from their first four years as a band. Are they Hoodlums? Are they Mountain Men? Do they have your back for life? Perhaps all of the above. PLANES lives in the seconds between a swing and a hit. Join them in the fight! Contained within are 24 songs, including the entire “self titled” album, “Knife in the Marathon” album, “Spearheading the Sin Movement” EP, “Fucking Fight” EP, four Black Flag covers, plus assorted comp songs and extras.

defianceohio_thefear_med.jpg
Defiance Ohio “The Fear, The Fear” CD/LP

D’OH return with 10 ten new songs! As unexpected as a new full album was so soon after “The Great Depression”, we were equally so very happy when we heard it! This is exactly what we needed to get us through the day: direct, yet sometimes poetic and personal lyrics that touch on politics and daily life, lotsa instruments weaving in and out, great string interplay… exactly what the doc ordered. Both realistic and uplifting, all the while grounded and imaginative. This may well be their best yet. “The List” melts my brain every time. Oh yeah, and the art is cool… same kinda printing as last time, poster insert, etc. (Watch out for the huge marketing campaign and ad spots on the WB. Just kidding! Haha!)

younglivers_newdrop_med.jpg
Young Livers “The New Era Drop” LP

Young Livers features folks from GLASS & ASHES, FIYA, and other musical brutarians and luminaries. Were I to say it sounded like Thin Lizzy, I would be taking a leap of journalistic license, but damn, those dueling guitar leads and jams do ignite the soul’s furnace in ways unexpected and joyous! So let’s drop names like the verb farmers we all are: Glass and Ashes, Wipers, Hoover, Drive Like Jehu, Sleepytime Trio, beer and good times hanging out at the show with brothers and sisters in arms. Hell yeah, that’s what I say.

IRON LUNG “Sexless / No Sex” LP/CD
Destructive power violence hardcore! The debut Prank LP from Seattle-via-San Francisco-via-Reno’s IRON LUNG features their abrasive blend of low end crushing heavy lumbering, split with devastating and inventive fast thrash and bleak lyrics skewed through medical malpractice. A 20-song second LP following up their “Life. Iron Lung.Death” LP on 625 Thrash on top of a ridiculous number of 7″‘s, split releases, cassettes, CD-R’s and other limited releases. The duo that is IRON LUNG sit at the forefront of the modern power violence resurgence, continually re-inventing the formula and pushing it to new extremes. IRON LUNG members were previously in ARTIMUS PYLE, GEHENNA, GOB and VAE VICTUS and have toured extensively throughout the US and Europe, been on TV in Iceland and also toured Australia, where they will return in 2008. “SEXLESS//NO SEX” was recorded at Polymorph Studios by Dan Rathbun (whose engineering and production includes some of the best of extreme underground hardcore – TRAGEDY, HIS HERO IS GONE, WORLD BURNS TO DEATH, FROM ASHES RISE). The cover artwork is mind blowing pen-and-ink scratching by NICK BLINKO of RUDIMENTARY PENI!

New Hours, New Books, New Releases

January 17, 2008

Hours.

I’ve been typically neglecting the store as of late.  All these out of town shows with bands I’m in and a really… um.. interesting new schedule at my job has eaten up mad time.  That combined with a combining of storefront factors, have left us with new hours at the store.   Without further adieu…

Wednesday 2-7pm
Thursday 2-7pm
Friday 2-7pm
Saturday 2-7pm

This starts tomorrow, and we’re closed today. Limited I know.  But having this reorganized means we’ll be getting more new stuff in the store.  We may be expanding the hours in the future.  Speaking of new stuff here’s some new books we got in…

* Talking the Walk: A Communications Guide for Racial Justice – Hunter Cutting
* The Day The Country Died: A History Of Anarcho Punk 1980-1984 DVD
* Beat the Heat: How to Handle Encounters With Law Enforcement – Katya Komisaruk
* The High Times Reader – Johnny Rotten
* Food Not Lawns: How To Turn Your Yard Into A Garden And Your
Neighborhood Into A Community – Heather C Flores
* We Owe You Nothing- Punk Planet: The Collected Interviews

New records are on the way too…

Until then, you can soak up some music by some bands we’ll be releasing on our in-house label soon…

Upcoming releases include…

brainwormy.jpg
A split 7″ between Richmond’s Brainworms (pictured) and St. Augustine’s Tubers.

repubtify.jpg
A split 7″ between Orlando’s  Republicorpse (pictured) and Scranton, Pennsylvania’s Dead Radical.

New Stuff… Some Brazilian Hardcore

December 14, 2007

Not in yet, just on the way..

discarga.jpg
DISCARGAQUE VENHA ABAIXO –  7´ EP New exclusive tracks from this brazilian local heroes. With no doubts Discarga is one the best bands that came out on 90´s in Brasil.Playing their fucking fast hardcore, they remind us Manliftingbanner and late Lärm with a brazilian early 80´s punk feeling. This exclusive Peculio Discos release includes 6 new tracks and a Septic Death version. Go faster if you can!

ROT + WOJCZECH – SPLIT 7´ Brand new tracks from both bands, total brutal and insane old school grindcore. Rot is the brazilian longest standing grindcore band and Wojczech is german grind assault!

AÇÃO DIRETA + CONTRASTO – SPLIT 7´ Ação Direta is still doing great after so many years; this recording brings an intense and brutal brazilian hardcore, includes an unreleased track plus a Wolfpack cover version. Contrasto is a political fast and noisy hardcore band from Italy, I´m shure you´ve heard their name before, they have two unreleased tracks here as well.

MY OWN LIES + BETERCORE NO MORE IMPERIALISTIC WAR – 7´ Two of the best bands that appeared in Europe in the 90´s! My own lies is the ultra fastcore heroes from Germany, Capitalist Casualties meets Drop Dead with some metal touch on the guitars. Betercore is the fucking-youth-crust-sXe-but-not-assholes straight in your face!  Directly from the Netherlands maintaining the tradition of awesome bands. Unreleased tracks from both bands.

I SHOT CYRUS / DISCARGASPLIT LP  Ultra brutal hardcore crossover with rocking guitars vs.super fast hardcore punk heroes. Brazilian hardcore at its best!

B.U.S.H. – New American Century – CD After the huge acceptation of their debut 7´ EP here comes the debut full-length. B.U.S.H. is getting a lot of attention lately with their unique sound that band consider themselves as a jam session between Minor Threath, Wire and brazilian early 80´s punk. This album is fantastic and puts them on the history of hardcore/punk forever.

B.U.S.H. + BRUCE BANNER– SPLIT 7´ Brazilian punk rockers B.U.S.H. seems to be the greatest revelation of the scene lately. 80´s american hardcore and skate punk with 60´s feeling and early 80´s brazilian punk all together makes this band awesome! Bruce Banner from Sweden can combine Scandinavian raw sound with 80´s american hardcore and thrash like nobody does. Now with duo male/female vocals.

BANDANOSWE CRUSH YOUR MIND WITH THE THRASH INSIDE – CD Veterans of the Brazilian scene who passed on several bands (Warhate, Prime Mover, NoViolence, Rot, Point of no return, Questions, …) for the last two decades joined together to play 80´s crossover in such a way that you can only think about bang your head and circle pit. Combination of Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I. and The Accused is the best definition of their sound.

Also, playing with Environmental Youth Crunch at the Millions of Dead Cops / Citizen Fish show last Thursday was rad!  So rad in fact that I didn’t bring my camera.  Above is a picture of them in… 1983.  Before Thursday’s show the last time I saw them play it was at a little coffee shop in Daytona a few years back.  Billy Regar booked them, as he booked lots of shows in Daytona then.  He currently does a yearly fest called ‘This Is For You Fest’ in Daytona. Read more about it here.  Get stoked for Mekago NT, Republicorpse, Cult Ritual, Shitstorm, Gomek and… I just realized I listed only Florida Bands.  I can’t help it I love to see my friends playing music.  Check the site for more bands!

And below is a picture of some bathroom writings in Richmond captured by a really neat local Richmond paper called RVA Mag.  Bathroom walls – the original blog. I like the comments section of this post.
jesus.jpg

Maybe just appreciate how I’m in a band that plays with Millions of Dead Cops, when hours before I was doing puppet shows for kids, doing watercolor art projects, and playing guitar and singing ‘Three Little Speckled Frogs’ to a group of toddlers.  It’s all positive.

New Band, New Records

October 30, 2007

vult.jpgI’m in a new band called Vultures.  We’re playing at the Good Idea House (on Ernest St.) Wednesday night with 2 Legit and Mommy’s Mistakes.  Starts around 8, ends around 10.

Then we’ll be playing a few dates around Florida.

Go to our website here for more information. It’s a myspace account, but thanks to some help from Max Wood, we blocked out all the ads and ugly useless stuff.  Still get connected easily to other people on that ugly social networking tool that literally everyone and their mother uses – but at least it’s a little bit more on our own terms.

We’re closed until November 5th since we’ll be out of town.  Here’s some new records coming in though.  Everytime I go out of town and get stoked on so many neat things – like last weekend being at Gainesville Fest –  I come back so amped about stuff and always end up buying more records for the store. Well not just any records. I always get stuff that I am super into. Anyway, this stuff we’ll be here in a week or so…

borndead.jpg
BORN DEAD – The Final Collapse LP

Gatefold sleeve + 8 page printed booklet. Charging Anarcho-punk, steeped in East bay hardcore moodiness and UK peace punk politics, this second LP by Oakland’s BORN/DEAD offers no let up in blasting fury, with seven new tracks and a raging cover of ’90’s English band CRESS. Ignited with raw guitar attack and pummeling drums, fueled by Dual vocal shouts spewing point blank politics, BORN/DEAD balance their street level, direct punk assault with the dark, artful edges of East Bay Hardcore (Ala Dead and Gone, Christ On Parade, Econochrist). Recorded by Greg Wilkinson ( Brainoil) at Ear Hammer with a flat UK’82- recording style, this LP comes packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with a printed 8- page lyric booklet. BORN/DEAD is currently on their third tour of Europe, following Multiple tours criss-crossing North America and Mexico and touring Australia and New Zealand in January.

LOOK BACK AND LAUGH – State of Illusion 7″
That’s right, this is a 7″ version of their out of print 4 song LP. A relentless barrage of raw and frenzied U.S. hardcore/punk with raging full-throttle politically/socially charged vocals. “State of Illusion” picks up right where their “Street Terrorism” EP left off, featuring some of the band’s most assaultive recorded material to date.

YACOPSAE/MASSGRAV – 5″
Germany and Sweden finally team up for this lil’ piece of fast and furious thrash! YACÖPSAE pay tribute to GANG GREEN (“Let’s drink some beer”) and VERBAL ABUSE (“I hate you”) while MASSGRAV fuck your brain with with cover of king of rock Eddie Meduza ( “Sossial Demokrateraa” ) and LOS CRUDOS (“Asesinos”).

vicous.jpg
VICIOUS – Alienated LP
Another retro record that sounds fresh in the modern day sound scape. Punk rock akin to Avengers, The Bags, or say 45 Grave but with a male singer. Catchy and enjoyable.

SHITSTORM/THE GENTLE ART OF CHOKING – split 7″
The second piece of vinyl by Hamburg’s thrash torpedo T.G.A.O.C., 7 more tunes that pick up where they left off after their 7″ debut in 2006. To the point, tight as fuck, still pulling the strings, ranging between something that once was called Powerviolence and ripping 80’s thrashcore! Just as somebody mentioned before: putting the hardcore back into hardcore!! After their smashing split 12″, Miami’s supernova of grindcore aka SHITSTORM deliver us some more immense assaults of blistering whirlwind-grind, that don’t let any time to draw breath in between! Absolutely determined to disassemble everything in range!!

younglivers.jpg
YOUNG LIVERS – The New Drop Era LP/CD

YOUNG LIVERS is the first all-new Gainesville band that No Idea have released records from in a while. Hell yeah, that’s what I say.

inepsy.jpg
INEPSY – No Speed Limit LP

Anticipated 3rd LP/CD by these canadian road warriors. They came out of nowhere with a fresh sound, stuck to it for their second LP, and turned up the filthy rock influences on this third one. More TANK, more KISS, less D-beat. Still the same old band though. Great production as usual, characteristic artwork, and a solid release.

insect1.jpg
INSECT WARFARE – World Extermination LP

Surpassing the brutality displayed on their earlier 7″ EPs, INSECT WARFARE deliver some of the fiercest grindcore since NAPALM DEATH`s From Enslavement on this LP. Seriously, this needs to be heard to be believed. No tech, no minimalist noise, this is pure, straight forward, raw grindcore that no other band seems able to deliver these days. While the larger death metal labels are salivating over this band, IxWx stay true to their DIY roots and prove that 1000mph raw grindcore belongs in the underground. Be prepared for slaughter.

violent-minds.gif
VIOLENT MINDS – We Are Nothing LP

Recorded by Zach (ex-SHARKATTACK) and Justin from MINDERASER on drums over a year and a half ago and features some of VIOLENT MINDS fastest tracks to date. Straight forward fierce hardcore stripped of polish – just raw distorted hardcore delivered at high velocity. Fans of DISCHARGE, MOTORHEAD and early American hardcore like NEGATIVE APPROACH take notice.

YOUNG OFFENDERS – s/t 7″
Straight out of the boozer and into the studio, these balding old timers from San Francisco bring the sounds of a northern council estate onto their second vinyl release. Four tracks of WIPERS, REALLY RED inspired post-punk darkness mixed with some C86 WEDDING PRESENT jangle and a dash of late 70’s Irish powerpop.

observers.jpg
THE OBSERVERS – Walk alone 7″

Finally out after a couple years waiting THE OBSERVERS Walk alone 7″ European press finally sees the light of the day! The A-side track is driving, intense, brooding, melodic and wholly unique while the 2 songs on the B side are a perfect example of timeless catchy yet moody punk rock. The recording and production is raw but that just adds to the tension and intensity. It’s somewhere between THE WIPERS, NEWTOWN NEUROTICS and THE ADVERTS. This 3 tracker is limited to just 500 copies.

reddons.jpg
RED DONS – Death To Idealism LP

The Red Dons are the continuation of the Observers. After members abruptly left the band in 2005, Douglas Burns, the Observers’ lead singer, artist, and primary songwriter teamed up with Hajji Husayn to continue on with the band. Next, Justin Maurer (Clorox Girls) on guitar and re-named this new line-up the Red Dons. Death to Idealism is the group’s first full-length album, and is perfect for fans of the Vicious, No Hope For the Kids, Gorilla Angreb, Clorox Girls, and of course the Observers. As to be expected, this record stays in tune with the melancholy, melodic, and sometimes unpredictable punk sounds of the Observers, and even features the excellent ‘Walk Alone’ track which appeared on a previous Observers 7″ . Vinyl version comes with full color gatefold cover. The Red Dons are currently on an extensive European tour with an full tour of the USA planned for later in 2007.

Day one of opening went well.  Luckily the leak in the ceiling isn’t above any merchandise. My lunch break from work to spraypaint a temporary sign went well, though left me hungry.  Max offered his leftover mop and bucket from Mooncolony after Mr. Yusge drummer literally couldn’t hold (on to) his beer.  Oh, being by a bar will be fun!  Laurel Lee dropped off her donation of a coffee percolator, so we’ll have great cheap coffee soon – thanks Laurel!

All of these books from that previous posts are enroute to the store as I type.

The Followup Update…

Once the store aspect is open and running smoothly, I’ll be getting the other great things scheduled and set up.  This is what’s on my list to get set up next.

* As mentioned in previous posts, Steve Sikes is working out a freeschool schedule – that should be alive and kicking by mid-late October.

* Although the community room space isn’t nearly complete, I’m talking with James Shanks, owner, of the new and neighboring Viva Computers (located in the SPAR building actually) about procuring some hot, and local, deal on Wi-Fi.

* I called the clinic yesterday to make sure they’re still on board for the free STD testing and they are.  I’ll be meeting with them next week at the space to see how we can accommodate them for a few hours once a week.

* Coffee. Yum.  I need to shop around for a big ol percolator. Donations of ‘hey, we got a percolator we don’t use’ are much appreciated. Get in touch.  Percolator donation by Laurel Lee will be picked up shortly.  Thanks Laurel!

And to not forget we’re a record / book store…

>>  New store construction playlist..

* Old Growth “s/t” CD – Local, who now resides in Portland, John Magnifico belts out some great rock tunes great for building a wall.

* Lemonheads “Hate Your Friends” CD – Garage rock played at hardcore punk speed. Whenever I hear the song “Uhhh” I think of the Pink Razors covering it, so that’s one more reason to smile.  Not for fans of the later Lemonheads stuff, but good painting music.   I actually got this at the local library, which is Inertia’s largest competitor for CDs – I love it!  The Jacksonville Public Library has so many good albums. Please check out what they have.

* Ten Volt Shock “6Null3” CD – Noisy buzz saw guitars to go with my circular saw.  This German band does some serious rockin’ on this record.  Wonderfully noisy post hardcore.

* Tubers “s/t” CD – Total classic in my mind. Toured with in Europe and love every song.  In fact, just go here and listen to them.

* Dead Friends “s/t” Cassette – Chris, from Merkit, has a label called Drugged Conscience based in Naples FL. That’s what this cassette release was done on. Dead Friends is Gainesville’s take on early 90’s hardcore ala Assfactor 4.  Super good.

>> And Reading list..

* On Subbing: The First Four Years by Dave Roche – Ok so I’ve read this before.  But when it came in I had to read it again.  Casual tone, but clear and concise.  Really funny, cute and often touching stories by a substitute teaching assistant. Short little entries on a day-to-day basis about subbing in on Special Ed classes. Some of the classes Dave, our friendly author, subs for include children with extreme behaviour problems or kids in wheelchairs/kids with severe handicaps. The writing is honest, earnest, and hilarious.  If you’re a punk rock/indie rock geek/nerd whatever you’ll love this. ” You get cute little drawings by the author’s friends and lots of entertainment – I’m partial to how the kids make fun of him and how often Dave gets kicked in the balls.

* My Brain Hurts by Liz Baille – A graphic novel about a group of teenage queer punks.  I’m not queer or in High School but it was still a good read.  It’s like they were your actual high school friends tho – pissing off the administration and taking care of each other when they get beat up.  Good dialogue, characters, and storytelling for sure.

Huey: The Spirit of The Panther by David Hilliard – Written by the chief of staff of the Black Panther Party, this book is a good insider view of the party’s beginnings.  It illuminates Huey’s use of not only the gun, but moreso the law as a gun. I got the this at the library too.
