New stuff on the way!!!

July 5, 2007

I’m in Germany right now and coming home soon.  I’ll have a full post about tour at some point, although with many less photos than I would like since my camera was stolen in Bremen.

Quickly though, as these internet cafe’s will eat your Euros – Touring Europe is amazing.  Every show had food for us and provided a place to stay. Lots of shows were at squats, sometimes for over 20 years old had these buildings been reclaimed.   Many of the shows were in Germany, and they were all amazing.  The Netherlands shows were both great, one of which was Thrashfest.  We played two shows in Northern Italy, traveling through the Alps en route.  These were very very small towns of amazing people who had a great time and made us feel very welcomed.  The first Italy show was at the towns community center, where we played to a bunch of children and people hanging out at what I think was the only bar in this village. Shows in France were great Lyon, a city I am not remembering the name of right now, and Paris.

Throughout the whole experience I was meeting people I’ve talked to online, sold records, and traded records with for years – through the label and mailorder.  And I traded a bunch more records in my visits. That is not on this list of new items, but will be when I get home…

Essentially, touring Europe made me very excited about Jacksonville and full of new ideas to bring to it.  See you soon!

And here’s some new stuff we’ll have on our shelves in less than a week.

Monsters + Art = Friday the 13th…of July

June 15, 2007

On July 13th there will be a house show going on in Riverside! For one night only, anything from Monsters and Goblins to Creatures and Zombies will be covering the walls of 2646 Herschel in Riverside. Featuring over 20 artists from all over North Florida, the Monster Show will feature an OPEN call for entries. Thats right, YOU, can submit something. The only rule being, the work has to be about monsters. What kind of monster? you decide. Drawing, painting, or sculpting? its up to you. if you can dream it we will take it. All entries must be dropped off at Inertia Records by Wednesday July 11th. All skill levels will be represented at the show so dont let your crappy drawing skills keep you from submitting. its a monster. you cant mess it up. the uglier the better. so go grab your crayons, pipecleaners and paper bags and get working. you have less than one month!

all questions can be emailed to Clay:
claydoran(-at-)gmail(-dot-)com (put monster show as subject (spam sucks) )
or buddy up with the artshow’s myspace here

Summertime Tours, Inertia

June 2, 2007

tourz.jpg
Summertime tours are upon us. I’m not even going to start listing all the tours coming through – all the great band coming to the States – and all the band going abroad. I recently updated the tours page for the bands I’ve worked with via Dead Tank and love.  Bands hitting the road pretty heavy here include Environmental Youth Crunch, Fiya, Merkit, I Object and Gomek.

Matt Welch, who books the shows at the Transitions Gallery at The Skatepark of Tampa (in Tampa!) does a nifty little column called “Tips for Bands” in a very great local / independent and FREE magazine from Tampa called Reax. Read it here. We actually got copies of the magazine in the store, to give out for free. Nice!

Touring is one of the most important things you do in a band. Right? You share the music you make with other communities and get to see how other music scenes are different.  I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want you to take being in a band seriously, since being serious about it means you get to tour, and that means fun.

That being said, here’s why this past month, and the one upcoming, you won’t be seeing much new stuff in the store at all.  Of those four bands I mentioned touring, two of them (EYC and Gomek) have records coming out on our in-house label, Dead Tank.   Due to some not-so-fun personal financial issues, money normally alloted for buying new items for the store had to be used to release these records before tour.  And there’s the obvious reason that, since I do all the buying for the store, that while I am away in Europe with EYC – I won’t be buying anything.

When I get back though, I should be full of inspiration form all sorts of different music scenes.  And frankly, the store is going to kick so much ass.

For example – I was searching out information on the Environmental Youth Crunch tour and found this message board post about a fest we’re playing called Thrashfest. Seein Red, Phoenix Bodies, Clorox Girls, Down to Nothing, Framtid (Japan), Morser, A.N.S, Ed Gein, Brutal Truth, Vae Victis – too many to mention. They have these ridiculously awesome shirts listing every band. And the bands may not even be the most important part. They have football teams listed for a competition during the day. And workshops by Anarchistische Groep Amsterdam (AGA), Anarchist Black Cross Amsterdam (ABC),
Luke Blackburn –> situatie in Cuba, Le Sabot –> veganistisch koken, and a few organizations I can’t figure out due to the language barrier. They are showing films like “The Weather Underground”, “The Yes-Men” and “American Hardcore” and over the three day festival they will have camping available. AND they have “KaKaKaraoke”, which is essentially punk rock karaoke. Wow. The homepage for this fest is here. The opening page has a neat map where you click on the countries and it brings up the bands playing from that country and links to band pages.

A Taste of Four Day Weekend – EYC / Alligator Tour

May 14, 2007

Here’s some random Four Day Weekend tour highlights.  More to come with words from all 13 people we brought with us.  My camera broke halfway through tour.  And a few people let me know that 2 megapixels is old technology.

youguyscantdothis.jpgPolice at New College say no drinking on campus. Bathroom party.

p5050377.jpg We got these great shorts for $1.

p5050380.jpg Wait, here’s a better picture of those shorts.

p5060399.jpg Costume contest at the Firefly in Miami. A little girl was a mermaid and won.

p5050311.jpg Champagne for Johnny Z every night.

eycrage.jpg Sarasota 3-way band battle. Ridiculously awesome. Three bands all set up at once rotating songs. Tallahasse representin’ hard.  Confetti.

p5050351.jpg The lending library at The Firelfy in Miami.

p5060441.jpg Gomek at The Firefly. This place is a huge house in downtown Miami a bunch of great people rent out.  A building with no roof is outside (we called it the Funder-dome) and that’s where the show was at.

Colossal Sounds and Colossal Squid

February 22, 2007

A great segue from the last post about Boris, one of the largest sounding bands…

squid.jpgA Colossal Squid was caught by New Zealanders today.  The squid, weighing an estimated 990 lbs and about 39 feet long, took two hours to land in Antarctic waters.

Dr. Steve O’Shea, a squid expert at the Auckland University of Technology, said of these aggressive deep-sea hunters, that if calamari rings were made from the squid they would be the size of tractor tires.

The runner up for squid size and weight is the Giant Squid which “have been seen in battle with adult whales. In 1965, a Soviet whaler watched a battle between a squid and a 40 ton sperm whale. In this case neither were victorious. The strangled whale was found floating in the sea with the squid’s tentacles wrapped around the whale’s throat. The squid’s severed head was found in the whale’s stomach.”

That’s probably the most metal thing I have ever heard.

Some recent studies have attributed global warming to larger squid size as well as to squid death.  Abnormally warm water causes a giant squid to rise to the surface and not be able to get back down, which is why they are probably more likely to be found in cooler water.

 seamonks1.png
Japetus Steenstrup, a Danish zoologist and professor, suggested that 16th century illustrations of sea monks could be interpreted as giant squid. Hence this bizarre image.
